There’s still time to register for the FREE online Scottish Socialist Voice Forum on working-class solutions to the climate crisis.

Prominent workers’ leader from South Africa, Zwilinzima Vavi, will attend as international speaker at the Voice Forum.

Zwelinzima Vavi is general secretary of the 800,000-strong South African Federation of Trade Unions (SAFTU) – the second-largest union formation in the country.

This mighty force of workers has been involved in many powerful struggles, including general strikes, with employers and the ANC government, for a living wage, energy justice, against privatisation, and in defence of workers’ rights and conditions.

Zweli is the leader of a mass union organisation that campaigns for public ownership and democratic control by workers and communities of renewable energy, and describes itself as “a revolutionary and socialist oriented federation”, with the fighting motto “Organise or Starve”.

We will be joined by Sam Mason, national political officer of the public and civil service union, PCS, who is prominent internationally and nationally in Trade Unions for Energy Democracy and the trade union wing of the COP26 Coalition.

Sam has spearheaded the campaigning work and publications of PCS on environmental justice and a Just Transition for workers for many years.

Stephen Smellie is deputy convenor of UNISON Scotland, and an elected member of that massive public-sector union’s National Executive.

Stephen is a prominent member of the COP26 Coalition trade union movement, a leading figure for years in UNISON’s campaigns for environmental measures in local authority, NHS, and other workplaces organised by UNISON.

SSP National Cospokesperson Colin Fox will speak on behalf of the Scottish Socialist Party.

Colin will set out how the SSP’s radical programme for a Socialist Green New Deal is both distinct in Scottish politics and absolutely necessary if Scotland is to get serious about the climate crisis.

A youth climate activist will also attend the Scottish Socialist Voice Forum, and explain just how much that generation stands to gain from the radical transformation of a Socialist Green New Deal – and how much could be lost without it.

As the climate catastrophe accelerates, heads of government, corporate bosses, and other dignitaries meet in Glasgow at COP26.

But the fact the 100 biggest multinational corporations have spewed out 71% of all greenhouse gas emissions since the 1980s shows we cannot rely on the capitalist polluters to tackle either the climate crisis or the economic crisis facing the mass of the population.

BUILDING MASS MOVEMENT

The point-blank question posed is how can a mass movement, with the working class and young climate activists at its heart, be mobilised to achieve a Just Transition to a clean, green economy which vastly improves the living standards, job security, and rights of the working class majority – in Scotland and abroad?

How can all the rhetoric about a Just Transition be transformed into reality – creating hundreds of thousands of skilled, secure, well-paid jobs, tackling pollution in the process?

This Public Forum will debate solutions to pollution like free public transport, public ownership of energy to transition to green energy with a vast expansion of jobs for workers currently in the fossil fuel industry, and construction of eco-homes for rent to combat global warming, fuel poverty and job insecurity.

WORKERS, YOUNG PEOPLE, AND SOCIALISTS

Register TODAY for this important Public Forum for fighters against climate catastrophe, poverty, and capitalist exploitation. You will then receive the ZOOM link.

Hear workers, young people, and socialists on the front line of struggle put forward a vision of how the power of a democratic mass movement, with workers at its heart, is required to bring about the system change to end climate change in a fashion that improves the lives and livelihoods of the working-class majority.
