Educational Edinburgh: Chile, democracy & socialism
22 August 2018 @ 7:00 pm - 9:00 pm
We’re taking a week out from charting the history of class struggle and organising in Britain to discuss Chile around the same period (1960s-1970s). The Chilean people have a proud record of resistance and solidarity in a dramatic history that has seen socialist governments/organisations and counter-revolutionary/military forces battle it out for decades.
We will be focusing on the experiences of Salvador Allende and his supporters, often cited as the first Marxist to be democratically elected as leader of a Latin American state. Indeed, Allende and the Socialist Party’s time in government is a case study on the relationship between socialism and democracy and the feasibility of a democratic road to socialism that has significant consequences for socialists the world over.
The topic will be introduced so if you’re an expert or have never heard of Allende, everyone is welcome for some informal collaborative learning. All welcome, members or non-members alike!
